Anishnaabe Nation

Anishinabek Nation territory extends eastward along the north shore of Lake Superior and the north shore of Lake Huron, including Manitoulin Island, Lake Nipissing as far as the Algonquins of Golden Lake First Nation. It then extends southward through the central part of Ontario and west to the Chippewas of Sarnia First Nation.

Within the Anishinabek Nation there are seven distinct tribal groups: Odawa, Ojibwe, Pottawatomi,Saulteaux, Chippewa, Algonquin and Mississauga . The common language is Ojibwe with strong dialectic differences in the territory. The Anishinabek Nation population represents approximately 30% of the total First Nation population in Ontario and 7% of the total First Nation population in Canada and is estimated at 100,000.

There are four treaty areas in the territory. The OCF represents 17 Ojibwe communities in the Robinson Huron Treaty area. This area stretches from Garden River First Nation, near Sault Ste Marie east to Nipissing First Nation and south to Shawanaga First Nation and includes Manitoulin Island, home of the OCF.
